Although the Alumni Association enjoys when our alumni remain a part of our local community throughout their lives, we recognize the amazing contributions many of our students and alumni make as they venture out across the globe. Dr. Amit “Bobby” Mahajan ’06 is no exception. His impact, and that of others like him, is inspiring and illustrates the true influence and mission of The University of Toledo.

Dr. Mahajan completed his undergraduate degree at Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts, medical school at The University of Toledo College of Medicine and Life Sciences, and his internal medicine residency, chief residency, and pulmonary and critical care fellowship at the University of Chicago. He then completed his interventional pulmonology fellowship at the Harvard Medical School in The Massachusetts General Hospital and The Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.

“I loved my experience at The University of Toledo. I learned the importance of hard work and working to achieve my goals. I wanted to absorb and read everything I possibly could during my medical school experience.”

Dr. Mahajan has deep roots in the Toledo community. A native of Toledo, Ohio, Dr. Mahajan shared, “The University of Toledo Medical School was incredibly familiar to me since I grew up in Toledo and knew that I could obtain a world-class education there. I wanted to stay close to family during my medical education and knew that having a strong community of support during that time would be essential.”

His mother, Dr. Ajay Mahajan, completed her internal medicine residency at the Medical College of Ohio, before it merged with The University of Toledo in July of 2006, and his father, Dr. Vijay Mahajan, is a pulmonologist at St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Toledo, Ohio. “The chance to learn and rotate with my father and mother during my third and fourth years of medical school was a huge driving force,” Dr. Mahajan recalled.

Inspired by his parents’ compassion and dedication to helping others, which he so clearly inherited, he began to shape and build his career. Along the way following guidance from a trusted professor.

Dr. Mahajan distinctly remembers receiving advice from Dr. Christopher Cooper, dean of The UToledo College of Medicine and Life Sciences, vice provost for educational health affairs and distinguished university professor while sitting in his office. Dr. Cooper shared that although clinical medicine is amazing, he advised Mahajan to also diversify his career. Dr. Cooper encouraged him to get involved with research, education and administration because having multiple facets to a successful career leads to a much happier life.

Shaping the Nation’s Health

This, in part, is likely what led him to become a national volunteer spokesman for the American Lung Association (ALA). This role involves educating patients, physicians and administrators on the importance of lung health. His role also includes performing education on a national level regarding lung cancer, lung cancer screening, incidental lung nodules, asthma, and air pollution and its effects on lung health. This experience has been incredibly rewarding for Dr. Mahajan and he is proud to be able to spread the importance of lung health with others.

Through his work, Dr. Amit “Bobby” Mahajan was awarded a Presidential Service Award. “The COVID-19 pandemic was a challenge for everyone in the medical profession. We all had to take on roles we were not accustomed to performing to provide the best possible care for our patients,” he shared. “I worked closely with the American Lung Association to educate the public about the dangers of COVID-19 and the importance of getting vaccinated.” As a result, he was awarded the White House Lifetime Achievement Award in 2022 for his work in interventional pulmonology and his contributions to the COVID-19 pandemic response. This is the true embodiment of improving the human condition, a mission that Dr. Mahajan so clearly lives out through his work every day.

“In some ways, I just considered myself to be doing the right thing for the community. During those challenging times, I relied immensely on my family, namely my wife, Sharmi, who supported me and kept me going with her constant encouragement.”

Dr. Amit “Bobby” Mahajan

Currently residing in Vienna, VA with his wife and three children, Dr. Mahajan still ensures his family knows how important they are. Dr. Mahajan loves spending time with his wife and three kids Rheidan (10), Rhoen (8) and Rhaiva (3). He shares that his family continues to be his source of inspiration. “I try to do everything I can to spend as much time as possible with my family despite a busy work schedule.”

With such strong family ties rooted in the service of others, it is obvious that Dr. Mahajan makes a positive impact on the lives of not only his personal patients, but individuals around the globe who have seen his work, heard him speak or supported his advocacy of better lung health. He, like so many of our alumni, are improving the world through their work and passion. We are proud to be just a small part of Dr. Mahajan and his family’s story.

Nate Boley, a sophomore studying professional sales within The University of Toledo’s John B. and Lillian E. Neff College of Business and Innovation, has a unique story to tell!

Boley was not just inspired to become a Rocket by stories he heard as a prospective student; he was inspired by the long history of UToledo graduates that came before him. Boley is the eleventh in his family to attend The University of Toledo, an impressive testimony to the pride the Boley family has for the University.

Nate Boley

A Sense of Belonging

He stated that, when it came to choosing which college to attend, a rich family history certainly helped. But more than that, “I also wanted to be in a great program. From my experience so far, the John B. and Lillian E Neff College of Business is first class in every way,” explained Boley. “The college pours in so many resources to students so that we can be successful, from Dean Balazs to all the professors. They really care about the students and their future success”.

His family was on board with his decision from the beginning. “When Nate made his decision to carry on our family legacy at UToledo, I couldn’t have been more excited,” said his mother, Ami Zellner-Boley ’90. “While there were other universities that courted him, they all lacked one element, which was the feeling of “home”.

A Passion for Athletics

Involvement at UToledo is also nothing new for the Boley family, especially when it comes to the UToledo Athletic Department. “Seeing the great success of our athletic department has been so much fun to watch and be a part of,” said Boley. The Boley family is filled with former Rocket student-athletes, including Boley’s brother-in-law, Drew Rosi ’20, ’22, who played football for the Rockets from 2017 – 21.

“There are so many memories of the great games we witnessed in the Glass Bowl and also traveling to away games,” he recalled. “I would say my favorite campus memory with my family was Drew’s last home game against Akron on November 27, 2021.”

“Drew scored his last career touchdown in the Glass Bowl; the Rockets won 49-14; and after the game Drew proposed to my sister, Logan Boley-Rosi ’20, ’23, on the sideline surrounded by family and friends!”

Nate Boley is joining that tradition and has been a part of Learfield’s Rocket Sports Properties (LRPS) for almost two years, working with UToledo Athletics’ sponsorship team. Boley says it is a natural fit for a professional sales major and aligns well with his dream of becoming a Division 1 College Athletic Director.

“It was a full circle moment for me on September 1, 2022, when UToledo played Long Island University. That was my first game working for LRPS, and my family was there to support me. They have been at almost every home game since 2017 supporting Drew and then me which is very special.”

Nate Boley (right) with his sister, Logan Boley-Rosi (left), and mom, Ami Boley (center)

When asked what has been the most impactful during his time at UToledo so far, Boley shared, “I would say the biggest experience so far that will always stick with me would be my freshman year introduction to business class.” He recalls Professor Gary Insch speaking to the class, “he told us that we are the future. He told us to be great leaders and talked about honesty and integrity and how no one can take that away from you.” Boley remembers this lecture and reflects on Professor Insch’s words whenever he has a big decision to make.

The experience reminds us all of the impact we can make by encouraging others. Something the Boley family certainly does a great job of, especially when it comes to sharing their pride for The University of Toledo.

Think you’ve got the Boley’s beat? Send us your Rocket Family photos or submit your story!

On Dec. 16, The University of Toledo celebrated more than 1,500 graduates, including 1,133 bachelor’s, 289 master’s and 126 doctoral candidates.

“The world is waiting for these students as they join the prestigious group of individuals who proudly call themselves alumni of The University of Toledo,” President Gregory Postel said. “They will always be an important part of our Rocket family, and we can’t wait to see what they’ll do next.”

Dec. 2023 graduates receive a one-year complimentary membership to the Alumni Association! Membership cards will be mailed out in February. To ensure your card is mailed to your current address, click here to update your information.

These are just two of the many outstanding graduates joining the ranks of our UToledo alumni network:

Ashley Jackson

Jackson became a three-time UToledo alumni this past commencement. She’d completed her bachelor’s degree in early childhood education at UToledo in 2004, and she pursued her first of two master’s degrees in education at UToledo, too, graduating again in 2006. On Dec. 16, she graduated with a doctorate in curriculum and instruction, specializing in special education.

She’s among the earliest graduates of her program, which distinguished itself as the first fully online doctoral program to be offered at a public or private university in the state when it began enrolling students in 2017.

That unique distance learning model was especially attractive to Jackson, who has been living and working in the United Arab Emirates since 2013.

“Pursuing my doctorate at UToledo while living and working abroad in Abu Dhabi has been highly rewarding, building upon prior experiences and encouraging me to excel in an environment that has fostered adaptability and resilience,” she said. “With my Ph.D., I aim to advance my research in early childhood special education and collaborate with local universities in Abu Dhabi. My goal is to mentor and support pre-service teachers, helping them navigate the complexities of early childhood special education while leveraging my experiences to enhance their skills and understanding.”

She credits her international relocation to an undergraduate experience at UToledo in 2002 when she participated in a forerunner to Rocket Kids.

“Participation in Camp Adventure Youth Services sparked my passion for travel and global engagement, allowing me to provide support and care for children and families worldwide,” she said.

Bill Maloy

“I thought I wasn’t cut out for college. Looking back, it was an application and maturity problem,” said Bill Maloy. “I just wasn’t ready to go to college.”

A job at ProMedica transporting patients, however, sparked a new interest for Maloy and exposure to nurses and respiratory therapists showed him a pathway to the healthcare field.

After careful consideration, Maloy enrolled in a respiratory care associate’s program. He earned his degree and began working as a respiratory therapist at ProMedica, where he has since risen to a supervisory role.

Earning a bachelor’s degree remained in the back of his mind, particularly as he looked to continue to advance in his career. With the encouragement of a friend and support from his wife and parents, Maloy finally made the leap in 2022, enrolling in UToledo’s 100% online Registered Respiratory Therapy Program.

Maloy liked his return to UToledo so much that he’s going to be sticking around. He plans to take two undergraduate courses in the spring and then apply for UToledo’s M.B.A. program.

“The biggest thing I would share with somebody is just because you didn’t know what you were doing then, doesn’t mean you can’t do it now. It was a scary thought process going back. I probably considered it for two years — do I have the time, do I have the money, is it something I can accomplish? It’s attainable for anybody. I wish I would have done it sooner,” he said. “It’s hard to believe it’s almost 20 years later. I hope my kids see that someday and it motivates them to chase their dreams and passions.”

The Alumni Association is excited to meet all of our new graduates as we continue to serve as a resource for alumni wishing to stay connected to their alma mater. Congratulations!

The University of Toledo adopted a new strategic plan in February of this year that will serve as our guide for strengthening our University over the next five years. The plan entitled, UToledo Reimagined: Strategic Plan 2023-2028, began implementation on July 1 and we are well underway with executing many of the strategies that were shaped by many voices that are important to the University, including faculty, staff, students and alumni.

Since then, your Alumni Association has been diligently working to update our strategic plan to align with that of the University and the UToledo Foundation. While our mission has always been “to engage and connect alumni, students and friends with the University”, our new plan will guide the way we live our mission and support our alma mater. Themes of the new plan include:

  • Creating engagement opportunities that excite our alumni.
  • Supporting the enrollment of future Rockets.
  • Increasing philanthropy in support of the Alumni Association.
  • Creating experiential learning opportunities for current students through a stronger connectivity to our alumni community.

The Alumni Association Board of Trustees, in partnership with the Alumni Engagement and Annual Giving staff, continue to focus on these themes while developing tactics that will help us to achieve our goals.  More information will be shared when the strategic plan is finalized later this year.

Stay safe, stay well, and thank you for your continued support!  Go Rockets!

We’re taking the famous rivalry off the field to support student scholarships, athletics, essential programs and more.

The University of Toledo is partnering with Bowling Green State University for an inaugural fundraising competition to give alumni and donors from both universities an opportunity to support a variety of high-priority funds.

The competition will kick off at midnight, Nov. 6, and conclude at noon on Nov. 14. The winner will be announced during the UToledo vs. BGSU football game at Doyt Perry Stadium.

Whichever school has the highest number of donors/participants, not dollars, will determine the winner. Donations must be a minimum of $5 to count toward the donor number.

All donations must come through the site below, starting Nov. 6. Early donations will not count.

The University of Toledo Alumni Association encourages all alumni, donors and friends to mark their calendars and participate in this competition – we want a win on the field and online on Nov. 14!

34 married couples and members of their families gathered in front of University Hall on Sept. 29 for The University of Toledo’s inaugural Rocket Romance event. Each of the couples had either met at or attended UToledo, ranging from two years of marriage to 53! Coordinated in partnership with the UToledo Office of Student Affairs and Office of Alumni Engagement, this event featured a live band, delicious appetizers and drinks, and plenty of nostalgia.

“We were thrilled to offer this unique experience for our Rocket alumni,” said Dr. Sammy Spann ’09, Division of Student Affairs vice president and dean of students. “So many people spend their undergraduate and graduate careers on campus so it is inevitable that some will find love during that time.” He continued, “Those special moments are core memories for many of our alumni, and this event was a great way to reconnect and rekindle their passion for UToledo.”

The highlight of the event was a vow renewal for all the couples, officiated by UToledo President Dr. Gregory Postel. There was not a dry eye amongst the attendees as Dr. Postel reminded the Rocket Romancers of the love they found at UToledo and continue to share.

“Rocket Romance is a wonderful new tradition to celebrate couples with UToledo as part of their love story and to welcome them back to campus for Homecoming to renew their love for each other and their alma mater,” UToledo President Gregory Postel said.

Watch the video below to hear how some of the couples met on campus.

“Each couple had stories to share,” said Dr. Spann, “One of these stories came from a Rocket couple who attended the University back in the 1950’s. They shared some of the struggles they faced as a married couple, at a time when married housing was not available on campus. Another couple shared how thankful they were for the opportunity to participate in this event “at the institution that shaped their lives”. These stories and so many more are what makes Rocket Nation such an incredible community!”

Other couples’ memories included those of:

  • Thomas ’75, ’78 and Mary Wakefield ’76 met on campus in the spring of 1973. Tom’s fondest UToledo memory with his spouse is “sitting on the steps of University Hall and eating cheesecake from Brauers delicatessen; and spending hours at a time talking about the meaning of life in the Student Union dining room.” The couple has been married since 1977!
  • Former Rockets Scott ’92, ’03, ’06 and Cathie ’04, ’08 France met online and later married in 2003. Their fondest UToledo memory is getting engaged on the UToledo tennis courts, where they later took wedding photos.
  • Erik ’13 and Kayann ’13, ’19 Carlson met at a Triangle fraternity party, and the rest was history. They attended events together to cheer each other on at functions such as football, marching band or helping to spot while being the mascot. They have been married since 2015.
  • John ’21 and Lovely ’19 Sims met in the Carlson Library. One may wonder how much productive studying was done after that! Their fondest UToledo memories together are their late-night walks on Campus, and International Student Association events.

If you missed this year’s vow renewal, don’t worry! The Office of Student Affairs plans to make this a reoccurring event during Homecoming weekend for years to come.
