From UToledo Co-Op to Alumni Leader
The University of Toledo Alumni Association’s 2025 Board President, Matt McClure ’04, exemplifies what it means to be a Rocket. As he steps into his new role, he brings with him a deep appreciation for the value and impact of a University of Toledo education and connection.

When McClure stepped on UToledo’s main campus as a first-year mechanical engineering student, he had no idea how quickly the experience would shape his future. Through UToledo’s nationally recognized co-op program, McClure landed a position at the Perry Nuclear Power Plant, an opportunity that became the launchpad for a 20-year career at FirstEnergy Corporation.
“UToledo gave me more than just a degree,” McClure said. “It gave me confidence, structure and a foundation for long-term success. That co-op opened the door to where I am today.”
In his professional role at First Energy, McClure supports advanced technologies that optimize voltage, forecast energy demand and restore power faster across the electrical grid. He’s also a registered professional engineer in Ohio and volunteers nationally with the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) to help write and review engineering licensing exams.
McClure has served on the Alumni Association Board since 2019, playing a key role in aligning the strategic goals of The University of Toledo, the Foundation, and the Alumni Association. His efforts have helped ensure all three organizations are advancing forward with a shared vision of the future.
“We’re in the second year of implementing those plans,” he explained. “It’s exciting to see real collaboration turning into momentum. My goal is to help strengthen that synergy and build a more connected, active alumni community.”
During his time as a student, he was deeply involved in campus life and still remembers the life lessons from professors who emphasized not just engineering, but financial literacy, leadership and character.

“I want other alumni to know: your involvement matters. Whether it’s mentoring students, attending events, or simply staying connected, there’s a place for everyone.”
As he takes the helm of the Alumni Board, Matt brings with him the same curiosity, drive and optimism that marked his time as a student. Only now, he’s working to ensure the next generation of Rockets gets the same powerful start.
